I'm a trained policy analyst with an ecology background. I have experience in partner outreach and collaboration in monitoring, adaptive management, and the conservation of biodiversity, wetlands, and riparian ecosystems. My results-oriented perspective was shaped by my time as a land manager for the Nature Conservancy and a policy analyst for PRBO Conservation Science. I'm also a birder and lover of the outdoors.

My Bachelor of Science in Biology comes from UNC-Chapel Hill, and my Master of Arts in Science, Technology, and Public Policy from the George Washington University. I also have a professional license to teach 7-12 science and English in Tennessee.

My writing spans a range of nonfiction styles, from technical cooperative agreements to magazine articles to creative nonfiction. As the working mother of a 9-year-old, my focus also includes environmental education and how to keep children plugged into the natural world rather than their screens.

I love to travel and have been fortunate enough to sail to the marine mammal and seabird colonies of the Farallones and Mexico’s San Benitos Islands, kayak and whale-watch in Baja, go birding in Guatemala’s Tikal ruins, hike in the Annapurnas of Nepal, meditate at Green Gulch Zen Center and Tassajara along the California coast, canoe the Cosumnes River's flooded bottomlands, photograph on safari in Kenya, take cooking classes in Thailand, and backpack through Europe with long stops in Wales, Paris, Greece, Spain, and Morocco.

That last destination inspired a story entitled “What Can’t Be Spoken,” published in Best Women’s Travel Writing 2007 edited by Lucy McCauley, Travelers’ Tales. It was republished in To Tell the Truth: Practice and Craft in Narrative Nonfiction by Connie Griffin, Pearson Education, Inc., 2009.
