Memphis's very own Zumba Queen is now Nu Life Fitness and Entertainment. Nu Life offers an expanded repertoire of classes, music, exercise, and healthy fun.

Imelda LaChica, creator and owner of Nu Life Fitness and Entertainment, goes by many names: Imelda, Mel, Mellow. That last name fits her laid back personality, but it in no way, shape, or form remotely resembles her Zumba classes!

Mellow is Memphis’ very own Zumba Queen, and with the establishment of Nu Life Fitness (901-619-5304 or imeldaq74@hotmail.com), she is expanding her offerings in Memphis. Now it will be even easier to have fun while dropping those holiday pounds.

Zumba on Offer

Zumba is a worldwide dance exercise phenomenon. It capitalizes on the popularity of Latin music, the mesmerizing beats of reggaeton, and the fun of just plain dancing to help people get - and stay - in shape.

Mellow was the first active certified zumba instructor in Memphis to spread her passion and love for Zumba. Although her name and her looks suggest a Latina ancestry, Mel is actually Filipino, Spanish, Burmese and Indonesian - born and raised in Singapore.

She’s been teaching in Memphis since 2006 and has developed quite a devoted following of students. Why? Because her classes are entertaining and fun! They’re not only a sweat-drenching workout but also dangerously addictive.

As of January 2011, Nu Life Fitness classes are held at Memphis Storm Gymnastics, 1225 Vermeer Cove in Cordova and she also teaches for French Riviera spa. Mellow recently added NuTotal Body fitness to her schedule, which is based on a group workout focusing on cardio endurance, strength, flexibility and your core. She also offers kids' classes and the occasional two-hour master class, featuring “Crunk Fitness” (no profanity), Zumba Toning, and yoga taught by guest instructors.

Live Up to Your New Year's Resolutions

If it’s post-holiday recovery of your sanity or your figure that you’re after, Mellow will be featuring the “Diva Challenge” regularly throughout the year. The challenge is to become a “nu you” in 14 days by working out regularly, including two Total Body Workouts each week. The two women who lose the most weight or inches after two weeks receive free classes or personal training sessions with Queen Mellow.

New Year’s resolutions aside, if you don’t exercise, or you don’t love what you do to stay in shape, try Zumba. You’ll be hooked. Class regulars sometimes get the opportunity to strut their Zumba stuff at community events, such as during halftime at the February 4, 2011 Memphis Grizzlies game in Fed Ex Forum.

Classes with Imelda LaChica Mellow are a steal at $7.00 per class or only $35 per month for unlimited classes. She also offers Personal training, private classes, parties, fund raisers and more. If you want exercise that will pump you up instead of deflating your ego, look no further.
